On Monday, President’s Day will be celebrated in the US. Prior to 1971, President's Day was a day to honor George Washington and was called "Washington’s Birthday." After the enactment of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, this holiday was renamed "President's Day" and was moved from February 22 – Washington’s actual birthday – to the third Monday in February.
George Washington presided during a time of great change – he was a member of the Continental Congress, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and the first president of a new nation.
Obviously on a much different level of importance, the CTRM, ETRM, and commodity management software market is experiencing a time of tremendous change.
There is a generational shift taking place from transaction based systems to solutions that provide sophisticated, real-time, analytics along with transaction management. It’s still absolutely necessary for a system to have the ability to handle transactions from upstream to downstream, but it’s not sufficient. The system must also harness the explosion of data, both internal and external to the system, and provide advanced analytics to ensure faster, better decision making.
It will be interesting to see if the "older" vendors can cross the chasm as we go through this paradigm shift. Having been in the ETRM/CTRM software market for over 11 years, I have my doubts about these vendors…we’ll see.
